Get Your Boat Ready: Are You Prepared?

Before you embark on your boating escapades, it's important to ensure that your vessel is ready to conquer the waters. But don't worry, it's not a tedious task. In addition to regular maintenance items that are checked often like the tires, wheel bearings, brakes and batteries, some safety items are not checked as often. Let's dive right into these essentials to make sure you're fully prepared for a safe and enjoyable journey.

  1. Life Jackets and Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs): Safety First!

First things first, check that you have enough properly fitting life jackets or PFDs for everyone on board. Give them a thorough inspection for any damage, tears, or signs of wear. If you're using inflatable types, don't forget to check the inflation canisters and their expiration dates. And remember to have a throwable cushion or ring on board too!

  2. Navigation and Safety Equipment: Stay on Course!

Ensure your boat’s navigation lights are in proper working order. Test your boat's horn or sound-producing device to make sure it's ready to announce your presence when needed. Check for any updates to your navigation or GPS system. Don't forget to inspect your boat's fire extinguisher(s) to ensure they are fully charged, easily accessible, and within their expiration dates. And remember, to the dates on your visual distress signal devices. Expired flares won't meet the Coast Guard's requirements.

  3. Communication Devices: Stay Connected!

Test your marine VHF radio to ensure it's functioning properly. Carry a fully charged cell phone or any reliable communication device in case of emergencies. Consider bringing a backup power source or portable charger (there are waterproof-ish ones) to keep your communication devices juiced up.

  4. First Aid Kit: Be Prepared for the Unexpected!

Inspect and restock your boat's first aid kit with essential items such as bandages, antiseptic ointment, pain relievers, and any necessary prescription medications. Ensure the first aid kit is easily accessible for quick and easy use.

  5. Equipment and Tools: Ready for Action!

Check your boat's anchor and anchor line to ensure they are in good condition and appropriate for your vessel's size. Inspect your boat's bilge pump(s) to ensure they are functioning correctly. Don't forget to carry a spare set of keys for your boat's ignition, just in case. Oh, and let's not overlook two more crucial items: the kill switch key lanyard and the boat plug. Either one of those wearing out or breaking will put a damper on the day.

By taking the time to maintain and inspect these safety items, you'll be well-prepared for a fantastic boating season. Did I miss anything essential? Let me know, and I'll make sure to add it to the checklist.

If you need to replace anything, check with your local stores like Fishermans-Marine around Portland OR. If you don’t have one nearby, I have included links to common items in Amazon.
